Below are listed some of the tonewoods available for your consideration. Engelmann Spruce - Generally slightly softer and less dense than Sitka, it is capable of developing a well balanced tone. Creamy white in appearance with even grain spacing. Sitka Spruce - Highest strength to density ratio yielding superb tonal qualities, albeit slightly more strident than other spruces. Sitka is not as light in colour as Engelmann or Lutz, but can exhibit an attractive pinkish tinge. Western Red Cedar - Although lower in strength and softer than
Sitka or Engelmann, it is very light in weight and produces a crisp,
clear tone. Unlike spruce, cedar requires very little time to
develop a mature sound. It has a pleasing, warm light reddish
brown colour. East Indian Rosewood - Still in good supply, this
rosewood has excellent overall properties. This wood is selected
as standard for the back and sides as outlined in specifications. A French Polished finish on the soundboard offers particular advantages beyond accentuating the beauty of the wood. This special technique of applying shellac by hand imparts a very thin, lustrous film which helps the instrument achieve maximum acoustical performance. Thinly applied specially formulated lacquer for instruments to the back and sides add durability. The finish used on the neck provides a silky smooth feel. |
